Fair Brooklyn, Fair Claire

Today, we strolled through the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens. Everything is beautiful in Brooklyn.
Last weekend, my brother Jonathan, his wife Lara, and their 4 1/2 month old daughter Claire stopped in on their way home to North Carolina from their vacation in Maine. They were all nursing colds from the chilly temperatures in Maine-- even Claire was sporting her first fever! But it was wonderful see them, and catch Claire at this great age.

Storm Clouds and Baseball

The weather has been beautiful in Brooklyn lately. Sunny and pleasant. We haven't even hoisted down our air conditioner from its cubby above our closet. Last time I mentioned how rainy it had been, however, and I wanted to post a couple pictures of a storm at the beginning of July. Also, here are some pictures I took then of our roof garden, now well underway. We haven't harvested any of our big tomatoes yet, but have tasted several cherry and grape tomatoes, as well as a bunch of sugar snap peas (which are now finished). Over the 4th of July, we enjoyed baseball, picnics, and fireworks all with good friends. On the 3rd we took the subway to Coney Island for a Brooklyn Cyclones game. (Brooklyn came back to win in the bottom of the ninth, very exciting.) Afterward, they shot off fireworks from the beach, which we watched from the pier. We could see eight other fireworks shows across the bay and further east on Long Island.
Earlier this summer, I convinced Bryan to watch some Bugs Bunny cartoons on Netflix, and I realized that Bugs Bunny is from Brooklyn! I also believe that "Coney" has something to do with rabbits, right? Maybe Bugs Bunny was from Coney Island. Hm. Anybody know?

For the past six months we had a really terrific intern at our church named Levi. He left to go work in Oregon on July 7th. Levi's the one that invited us to go to the Brooklyn Cyclones game on the 3rd, and he also invited us to go to a Mets game with him at the end of June. Here is Levi on the 4th of July (with our friend Joy), squinting to see the distant Hudson River fireworks.
